Akinyinka Omigbodun, a respected Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics at the University of Ibadan, has urged the government to adopt strategies to deter intellectuals and professionals from emigrating in search of better opportunities.

Speaking at the fourth Emeritus Professor Oladipupo Akinkugbe Distinguished Lecture at the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, Omigbodun addressed the pressing issue of youth migration, underscoring its national importance. He emphasized the need to create an environment that encourages professionals and scholars to stay in Nigeria and contribute to its progress.

“Seeking better opportunities abroad is a persistent national challenge,” Omigbodun remarked. “While we can’t stop individuals from seeking their welfare, we can improve conditions in Nigeria to retain our talent and support national growth.”

Omigbodun also highlighted that those who migrate often return to make significant contributions to the country. “Those who leave are not lost to us. Many return to support various initiatives, offering financial resources, time, and expertise to benefit those still in the country. It’s not just a loss; we can benefit from their experiences.”

He further advocated for a positive shift in attitude towards national leadership, urging support and prayers for Nigerian leaders instead of criticism. “Every nation faces challenges, and Nigeria is no exception. We must collectively support, pray for, and advise our leaders. By doing so, we can contribute to a better Nigeria.”

Reflecting on the legacy of Emeritus Prof. Oladipupo Akinkugbe, Omigbodun praised him as an exemplary leader and mentor, emphasizing the vital role such figures play in Nigeria’s academic development.

In response, Vice-Chancellor of UNIMED, Prof. Adesegun Fatusi, emphasized the event’s goal of honoring Akinkugbe’s legacy, describing him as a model of excellence whose achievements should inspire future generations.
