Four young female students from Jacob’s Well High School International in Port Harcourt have developed an innovative Android app called AgriConnect, designed to address hunger issues in Nigeria. Their groundbreaking work has earned them a spot at this year’s World Technovation Girls Challenge in Silicon Valley, California, from October 15 to 19, 2024. This prestigious event brings together the world’s top young female app developers after a rigorous selection process.
The students, Oghenemaro Tejiri (12), Salome Akhabhau (11), Excel Barile-Nwika (11), and Goodness Nwonanne-Chima (12), are under the guidance of Code Ambassadors, a consulting group dedicated to nurturing young tech talent. Their app, AgriConnect, was chosen from over 3,200 submissions by about 11,000 girls from 69 countries.
Competing in the beginner’s division for ages 8-12, the team, known as the Smart Elite, emerged as finalists after a series of assessments by experts. Their exceptional performance earned them a special recognition and an all-expenses-paid trip to the summit.
Mrs. Egondu Jacob, the school’s coordinator and proprietor, expressed immense pride in their achievement, noting the significance of their contribution to global tech innovation from Rivers State, the Niger Delta, and Nigeria. She highlighted the school’s commitment to providing top-notch tech education, inspired by the successes of her own children in academic and competitive arenas.
The consultant for the school, Mr. Somkenechukwu Mamah, praised the students’ dedication and foresaw a bright future for them in tech entrepreneurship, particularly in the agricultural sector. He emphasized the importance of continued support and resources to help them bring their solution to wider use.
Jacob’s Well High School continues to lead in tech education, encouraging young minds to create impactful solutions. With initiatives like coding and robotics introduced from primary levels, the school aims to nurture future innovators who will make significant contributions globally.
